Cyril Harrison 7.12.1926 - 23.5.2007

We regret to report that Life Member Cyril Harrison, our most longstanding member, died on 23 May 2007.
Cyril was a member of Harrow Referees' Society briefly in the 1950s and then continuously from the 1962/63 season and was awarded a Life Membership in recognition of his long service as both
Treasurer (four seasons from 1st November 1968 to May 1972) and auditor (31 seasons from 1972/73 to 2003/04).  He was also a former Mayor of Harrow and long-serving Harrow councillor.  There will be many who will be saddened at his death.

Service of Appreciation

On Sunday 9th December 2007 David Roberts, Graeme Thorley and Gordon Isaacs attended a service of appreciation to mark Cyril's life.

The service took place in the Council Chamber of the Civic Centre and was led by the Mayor of Harrow.

The mood was deliberately upbeat: an eclectic mix of live music - from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers to Trad Jazz - interspersed with tributes covering an equally wide range of Cyril's interests.  From politics (Minister of State Tony McNulty and MEP Robert Evans) to law (past Chairman of the Institute of Barristers' Clerks) to football (Gordon Isaacs as close friend and past President of HRS).

It was a fitting testimony to a remarkable man.

A Tribute

Harrow Society President Graeme Thorley paid the following tribute:

"I was treasurer of Harrow Referees' Society for 14 years and during almost the whole of that time Cyril was my auditor.
I used to pop round each April to his home in Spencer Road toting the rather battered brown case he had procured to store all the paperwork. He was always diligent in his auditing, always with a few questions to get me scratching my head, and always turned the books round in the required time, even if I did not give him as much as I should have.
He was a good friend to Harrow and will be sadly missed.

The season is now at an end but we will mark his passing at the first meeting of the new season in September with a minute’s silence. "
